Phoenix CC

The Phoenix Cycling Club was founded in 1919 to promote and encourage the sport of cycling in Liverpool.

Much has changed since those early days but our aim remains the same. Over the years our club has amassed a rich history of cycling achievement. Our members are actively engaged in all areas of cycling including cycling touring, track racing, time trials, ultra-distance events and last but not least social rides just for the company and a few laughs. We cater for all levels of ability from the very athletic to Sunday leisure rider.

For the more adventurous the club provides a full calendar of racing events during the spring/summer and we promote weekly evening time trials on local courses over a distance of 10 and 25 miles. Our record of achievement here is exceptional, Phoenix riders are regularly in the thick of the action on local courses in Merseyside and further afield.

Away from the racing our most popular activities include our weekly Sunday club rides. These take in some of the most scenic roads and countryside in the North West. All run destinations, meeting points and dates are published on our website. In addition we also hold club nights and other social events that provide an opportunity to have a few drinks and join in the banter.

Club Rides

On Sundays we frequently offer rides starting from locations in Liverpool. The route is often flat and the distance can vary but by riding in good company the miles will soon slip by. There's usually a tea stop at the halfway point and it's a very sociable way to improve your cycling and fitness, chat with fellow members and have a bit of a laugh. At the end of the day you might be surprised how far you've travelled.

How old do I have to be?

The Phoenix caters for juniors riders upwards (16+).

What are the advantages of becoming a member of Phoenix CC?

If you are a member of a club, you will get much more from cycling. The frequency and variety of rides mean you do more cycling and as you do more, you get fitter. The camaraderie and friendships make the miles so much more enjoyable...and safer.

You’ll have the opportunity to take part in the racing and other cycle events or just enjoy the regular social events / rides. We also frequently organise trips to France and Italy and everyone in the club is welcome.

Do I have to have previous cycling experience?

Ideally, yes. You should have a reliable road bike and be able to ride comfortably for a reasonable distance. Perhaps you have been commuting or going out for longer weekend rides. The Sunday 'Club Runs' do require a reasonably healthy condition, but anyone who is actively fit and healthy i.e. runs, swims or takes part in regular sport would not have a problem.

Who can I talk to?

Arthur Winstanley is our contact (07817822330) or email Keith Williams and we'll discuss the best way to fit you in. You can come along to one of our social events or club rides and see for yourself what a friendly bunch of people we are!

If I'm thinking about joining, can I join the club on a ride or two to see if I "fit in"?

We actively encourage this and new riders are welcome to come out on the club ride before applying to join. Please get in touch first so we can ensure we have members to meet you. Take a look at our club ride schedule for dates and destination information.

What if I don't want to take part in racing?

We have a club competition and members who want to race can participate. You're under no obligation to take part in any racing if you don't want to - it's entirely up to you!

How do I join?

The first step is to get in touch! If you like our club then we can arrange a membership form for you to fill out.
